PORTAL GALLERY, which started in 1959 has become internationally famous for specialising in beautfully painted pictures by living artists. The work on show is sometimes surreal and has a touch of magic realism and flashes of humour.
The gallery exhibits the work of 30 British painters and has one person and group exhibitions throughout the year.
Beryl Cook, the gallery's most celebrated artist, started painting in her forties, Portal held her first exhibition in 1976. Since her brilliant debut, the former seaside landlady and her colourful world of large ladies, male strippers, drag acts, bars and night clubs have found admirers all over the world, Beryl has received the O.B.E.from the Queen and her paintings hang many public collections and in the private collections of Jackie Collins and Whoopie Goldberg. Beryl Cook is without doubt one of the most original painters working today.
